United Hospice


Since 1989, Amy Stern has been the Executive Director and presently, the Chief Executive Officer, of United Hospice (UH).  Each year, UH provides care and support to nearly 800 individuals and families in our community who are facing advanced illness.  United Hospice operates the Joe Raso Hospice Residence.  UH’s caring staff & volunteers provides care, hope, comfort and improved quality of life to individuals and their families facing serious illness. Through the Provident Bank Hope & Healing Center, they offer compassionate support to hundreds members of our community each year who have experienced the loss of a loved one. UH leads the health and human services community in improving the provision of care to those affected by serious illness.

Amy received her Bachelors Degree from Queens College (CUNY) in 1979 and her Masters of Social Work from Columbia University in 1981.

Prior to becoming CEO, Amy was the first social worker for our community’s hospice program.  Her work before hospice included the establishment of a palliative care home care program at Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as work in acute care hospitals and foster care.

Amy is former member of the board of directors of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York State and still serves on their NYS Legislative and Regulatory.  She serves on the ethics committee of Good Samaritan Hospital.  She is a founding member of the Institute for Non-Profits.

            Amy developed, a free, secure, internet- based service that enables individuals to store and retrieve their advance directives.

            Amy, and her husband, Gary reside in Haverstraw.  They have two daughters, Amanda, married to Stephen Turek & Elizabeth, married to Adam Schwarzenberg.
